- Challenge
- Connect Waikato needed a website for a free community event that could explain the kaupapa, sell out a free registration, and look unmistakably of the Waikato. It had to load instantly on a phone, hold up when shared into community groups and on social media, and be simple and dependable to host and update.
- Solution
- A hand-crafted, single-page static site with a custom Waikato-inspired brand, D3-powered river animations and a self-contained, framework-free architecture, designed, built and deployed to Vercel in days using an AI-assisted workflow.
- A fast, single-page site that loads instantly on a phone and holds up when shared into community groups and social feeds.
- A custom Waikato-inspired brand, with D3-powered river animations that respect reduced-motion settings.
- A self-contained, framework-free build with almost nothing to break and very little to maintain.
- Search- and social-ready out of the box, with Open Graph, structured data, a sitemap and a full favicon set.
The Challenge
Connect Waikato needed a website that could do three things well: explain a community event about adopting AI without losing the human element, sell out a free registration, and look unmistakably of the Waikato. It had to load instantly on a phone in a cafe, hold up when shared into community groups and on social media, and be simple and dependable to host and update. In other words: high craft, low fuss.
Instant on a phone
The site had to load fast on a mobile in a cafe and stay smooth when shared into community groups, where a slow or heavy page simply gets skipped.
Unmistakably of the Waikato
A generic template wouldn't do. The event needed a brand that felt like it belonged to its place and community, not to a theme a thousand other sites are also running.
Simple, dependable hosting
As a free community event, the site had to be simple to host and maintain, with nothing fragile to keep patched.
Built to convert
The whole point was registrations, so the path from landing on the page to booking a free ticket had to be clear and frictionless.
The Solution
Longcloud designed and built a bespoke, single-page event website: a hand-coded static site with a brand rooted in place and motion that earns its keep.
A brand rooted in place
A custom identity built around the Waikato River and whenua: deep jade and forest greens, a warm bone and cream for type, and clay and ochre accents. A flowing river-wave motif runs through the design, and the site closes on a whakataukī used respectfully and in context. Typography pairs Fraunces for display with Hanken Grotesk for body, for a voice that's editorial but friendly.
One page, fully self-contained
The entire site is built as a single, self-contained page with no heavy framework behind it. Everything it needs is bundled and optimised, so there's very little to download, no fragile pipeline to maintain, and almost nothing to break.
The payoff is simplicity and speed: a site anyone can open and read end to end, that loads instantly, looks like it belongs to the Waikato, and is effortless to run.
How It Works
Stack: A hand-built static site with custom D3.js motion graphics, hosted on Vercel's global edge network, with Humanitix handling ticketing.
Motion that earns its place
The river isn't a static graphic. It's custom-built motion, hand-drawn paths animated with smooth, natural easing, alongside a live registrations countdown and subtle entrance animations. All of it respects the visitor's reduced-motion setting, so the experience stays comfortable and accessible.
Built for performance
Performance was a first-class requirement: a lightweight page with no heavy framework to download, fonts that load without ever leaving text invisible, aggressive caching on every asset, and a tuned, fully responsive layout that adapts cleanly from large desktops down to phones.
Discoverable by people and machines
The site ships search- and social-ready out of the box: complete metadata, polished social share previews, and a clean semantic structure that gives both search engines and AI answer engines a clear, well-organised page to read and surface.
Secure by default
Security is handled at the edge, with a hardened set of HTTP security headers and a strict permissions policy that switches off the device access the site never needs, like location, microphone and camera.
Deployment that's simple and dependable
Updates deploy automatically: a change ships to production in seconds across a global CDN, with automatic HTTPS and clean URLs. There are no servers to manage and nothing to patch.
An AI-assisted build
Brand exploration, layout, copy refinement, the D3 animation code, accessibility passes, SEO metadata and deployment config were all produced and iterated in a tight, human-in-the-loop AI-assisted workflow. AI does the heavy lifting; we own the judgement, the craft and the quality bar.
What's next: The same approach scales to whatever comes next: extra pages, a speaker or programme section, multi-event support, or a light content layer so the team can edit copy themselves, all without giving up the speed and simplicity that keep the site fast and easy to run.
